He warned that Venezuela's elections next Sunday "will be critical to the common destiny of the region" and expressed "solidarity" of the Cuban government of President Hugo Chavez to "destabilization attempts that can be foreseen."
Moreover, and in reference to the civil war in Syria, the Cuban foreign minister denounced an attempt by Western powers to "overthrow" the government of President Bashar al-Assad arming opposition groups and using mercenaries.
"The government of the United States and some in Europe have decided to overthrow the Syrian government, for which they have armed, trained and funded opposition groups, including the use of mercenaries," he said.
"Thanks mainly to strong opposition from Russia and China, it was not possible to manipulate the Security Council to impose interventionist formula applied in recent military adventures," he added.
Finally, he reiterated that the UN General Assembly "must act resolutely in the recognition of the Palestinian state as a full member of the United Nations, with its pre-1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital."
